Materialistic world is not
a myth
For example some people do not present things in a simple and straightforward
manner. They use bombastic words to prove their intellectual power
before us. To prove that this physical world is only a myth and not
a reality we put forward many theories . One such theory is ‘the
rope and snake theory’. One need not get awestruck on hearing
this at all. It goes like this. The entire world is pervaded with
Brahman. There is nothing called ‘jagat’. That is all
an illusion. Suppose on reading and hearing about such principles
as mentioned above, one might immediately raise a question as to –“Then
what is all this, that we actually see? Is it all a mere illusion?
Then how can we really see this world?”. The answer is ready.
That is because we are clouded by the cataract of ignorance. And this
ignorance makes it appear as the physical world present around us.
Take the following example. People say that ignorance is like darkness-that
is like mistaking the rope to be a snake in the darkness. In fact,
the rope is not a snake, but in the darkness it ‘appeared’
to be a snake, only due to the element of ignorance called ‘darkness’.
Thus , in the same way , the so called ‘world’ around
us is also a mere illusion due to our ignorance.
In other words, there is nothing called the world (physical and material
world).Only Brahman- the all pervading is real. This is ‘the
rope and snake theory’. But in reality, there is a big fraud
behind this principle. There is an object called the snake and there
is another object called the rope. So it means that the reason for
mistaking the rope to be a snake is only because the person has already
seen a snake before. Here the rope and snake are in fact true objects.
But according to the ‘Advaitik’ school of thought, there
is nothing called ‘jagat’. In short they are trying to
prove that one, out of the two real objects given in the example is
really non- existent. What a dramatic irony! We can call such explanations
a philosophical jugglery.
Exactly in the same way is the ‘Jeevo Brahma na pura’
theory. That means-Brahman (Self Supreme) and Jeeva are not two distinct
entities or in short, it established that Jeeva and Eeshwara are not
one and the same. If that is so, then look at the opening verses of
the ‘ Vedantadarshana’. It reads as follows- ‘Athato
Brahmajnijnasa’ which means that, those who are curious about
Brahman, let them learn about it. If Brahman and Jeeva are one and
the same, then who is curious? About whom? Self about self? Can one
get on top of one’s own self?
Sree Sankaracharya himself has pointed out that it is mere folly to
think that one will get salvation (moksha) , by placing forth unwanted
principles and theories , pretending to be the outcome of his intellect
foe the common man. He also laughed at the various dress codes, eapecially
the orche clad for appeasing one’s hunger. He had specifically
said that it is more beneficial to meditate on ‘Govinda’
than merely adhere to the studt of grammar rules. But instead, the
Grihastas began to imitate the Sanyasis. As a result, they did not
get any enlightenment as they were ignorant of the basis of these
principles.
Once, after getting enlightenment, Siddharta returned home. His wife
Yeshodhara confronted him with questions as to what else had he gained
after renouncing everything that was available there. And he had to
admit the fact that he had gained nothing which was not available
there. Many people renounce their homes in the name of Sanyasa. Has
your house ever told you that it belongs to you? No – never.
It is you who said that the house belonged to you. It is you, who
has the awareness that everything belongs to you.
Many seem to use the word ‘ renunciation’ .They say-I
renounced my family, I renounced my wealth, I renounced everything.
But they are not true renouncers because they have not yet renounced
the ego I. The very renunciation is done with much pride saying-I
renounced. Until the word I is removed, true renunciation is impossible
